Excessive intake of aspartame may inhibit the ability of enzymes in the brain to function normally.

The review, by scientists from the University of Pretoria and the University of Limpopo and published recently in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, indicated that high consumption of the sweetener may lead to neurodegeneration.

Aspartame is made up of phenylalanine (50 per cent), aspartic acid (40 per cent) and methanol (10 per cent). It is commonly used in food products for the diet or low calorie market, including soft drinks and chewing gums. It was approved for use in foods in the US and EU member states in the early 1980s.

The sweetener has caused much controversy amid suspicions on whether it is entirely safe, with studies linking the ingredient and cancer in rats.

It has also previously been found that aspartame consumption can cause neurological and behavioural disturbances in sensitive individuals. Symptoms that have been reported include headaches, insomnia and seizures.

Despite strong concerns being raised from some quarters over the sweetener, both the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have not changed their guidelines regarding the safety of the ingredient or intake advice.

The new review also challenges finding published last year in the journal Critical Reviews in Toxicology (Informa Healthcase) that considered over 500 studies, articles and reports conducted over the last 25 years - including work that was not published, but that was submitted to government bodies as part of the regulatory approvals process.

The earlier review concluded: 'The weight of existing evidence s that aspartame is safe at current levels of consumption... No credible evidence was found that aspartame is carcinogenic, neurotoxic, or has any other adverse effect on health when consumed even at quantities many times the established ADI [acceptable daily intake] levels.'

New review

Writing in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a Nature journal, the scientists behind the new review state: 'The aim of this study was to discuss the direct and indirect cellular effects of aspartame on the brain, and we propose that excessive aspartame ingestion might be involved in the pathogenesis of certain mental disorders, and also in compromised learning and emotional functioning.'

The researchers found a number of direct and indirect changes that occur in the brain as a result of high consumption levels of aspartame, leading to neurodegeneration.

They found aspartame can disturb the metabolism of amino acids, protein structure and metabolism, the integrity of nucleic acids, neuronal function and endocrine balances. It also may change the brain concentrations of catecholamines, which include norepinephrine, epinephrine and domapine.

Additionally, they said the breakdown of aspartame causes nerves to fire excessively, which can indirectly lead to a high rate of neuron depolarisation.

The researchers added: 'The energy systems for certain required enzyme reactions become compromised, thus indirectly leading to the inability of enzymes to function optimally.

'The ATP stores [adenosine triphosphate] in the cells are depleted, indicating that low concentrations of glucose are present in the cells, and this in turn will indirectly decrease the synthesis of acetylcholine, glutamate and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid).'

Furthermore, the functioning of glutamate as an excitatory neurotransmitter is inhibited as a result of the intracellular calcium uptake being altered, and mitochondria are damaged, which the researchers said could lead to apoptosis (cell death) of cells and also a decreased rate of oxidative metabolism.

As a result of their study, the researchers said more testing is required to further determine the health effects on aspartame and bring an end to the controversy.

ADHD teens calmed by omega oils

Supplements of omega-3 and omega-6 oils could improve the behaviour and the attention span of teens with ADHD, say English researchers.

The new study supplemented 20 teenagers aged between 12 and 15 with omega-3 fish oils. Over 90 per cent of the teenagers, recruited from Greenfield Community Arts College in Newton Aycliffe, were assessed to have moderate to severe Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

ADHD is thought to affect between three to seven per cent of children in the UK, with the problem continuing into adulthood for as many as 60 per cent of sufferers. Boys are reported to be three times more likely than girls to suffer from ADHD, according to the National Attention Deficit Disorder Information and Support Service (ADDISS).

The main behavioural traits include impulsiveness, inattentiveness and hyperactivity.

After three months of supplementation the teenagers’ inattentiveness fell from an average of 94 at the start of the trial to a mere 17 per cent at the end. Similar impressive results were observed for impulsivity, with an initial rating of 89 per cent falling to 28 per cent after supplementation with omega 3 fatty acids.

Dr Madeleine Portwood, lead researcher and senior educational psychologist for Durham Council, told NutraIngredients.com that teenagers with persistent difficulties who had clinically diagnosed ADHD had specifically been recruited to participate in the trial.

The trial was open and that the participants were aware that they were taking the fish oils. The results are to be published in the book series Nutrition and Health.

The supplement, provided by Equazen Nutraceuticals, was derived from high-EPA marine fish oil and virgin evening primrose oil (GLA). The eyeq capsules formulation contained Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), Docosahexaenioc acid (DHA), GLA, and vitamin E.

Volunteers took six capsules per day, equal to 500 mg of EPA.
The mechanism behind the supplement's effect seems to be specific to the type of omega oil. (EPA) is proposed to function by increasing blood flow in the body. It is also suggested to affect hormones and the immune system, both of which have a direct effect on brain function.

Docosahexaenioc acid (DHA), on the other hand, is involved in the membrane of ion channels in the brain, making it easier for them to change shape and transit electrical signals.

This is not the first report of improvements in behaviour due to fish oil supplements. The work follows similar improvements due to omega-3 supplements for children aged 18 to 30 months, also reported by Portwood and colleagues.

Dr. Portwood also told NutraIngredients.com that further research using fish oils was due to be published in the future. One study involves the use of the supplements on the food intolerance of 80 autistic children, a group linked to increased incidence of food intolerance, as well as the results of the largest mainstream fish oil supplementation trial of 270 children.

1/29/2007- Less than one in ten US children are eating the recommended levels of fruit and vegetables per day, according to a new study.

Published in next month's issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the latest information adds to the growing body of evidence indicating that most adolescents fail to meet the nation's dietary guidelines.

According to the study, which analyzed the behavior of almost 900 children aged 11 to 15, only 12 percent of participants consumed the recommended five or more daily servings of fruit and vegetables. This is 10 percentage points lower than what has been reported nationally, said the researchers.

In addition, only 32 percent of children were found to meet the recommendations for saturated fat intake of less than 10 percent of total energy.

Family dietary practices were found to be associated with adolescents' food choices, with parents' consumption of fat, fruit and vegetables being identified as a predictor of adolescent consumption habits.

The report also looked at children's levels of physical activity, and their television viewing time, both additional factors generally associated with obesity risk. According to the study's findings, nearly 80 percent of participants revealed 'multiple physical activity and dietary risk behaviors'.

The report concluded that further research is needed to investigate the effectiveness of different programs and strategies designed to promote 'multiple behavior change' in adolescence.

According to a report issued in September by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), one third of American children are either obese or at risk for obesity. And the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal that in the past quarter century, the proportion of overweight children aged 6-11 has doubled, while the number of overweight adolescents has tripled.

The dramatic rise in obesity has prompted widespread changes throughout the food industry, schools and communities in an effort to prevent the spreading epidemic.

Indeed, the IOM's report examined the nation's progress in preventing childhood obesity, providing further recommendations for government, industry, media, communities, schools, and families to collectively respond to the growing obesity epidemic in children and youth.

WASHINGTON-The Coca-Cola Company has been served notice of a class action lawsuit filed over what the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) says are deceptive and unsubstantiated claims on its VitaminWater line of beverages. Coke markets VitaminWater as a healthful alternative to soda by labeling its several flavors with such health buzz words as "defense," "rescue," "energy," and "endurance." The company makes a wide range of dramatic claims, including that its drinks variously reduce the risk of chronic disease, reduce the risk of eye disease, promote healthy joints, and support optimal immune function.

In fact, according to CSPI nutritionists, the 33 grams of sugar in each bottle of VitaminWater do more to promote obesity, diabetes, and other health problems than the vitamins in the drinks do to perform the advertised benefits listed on the bottles.

CSPI's litigation department is serving as co-counsel in the suit, filed yesterday in United States District Court in the Northern District of California. The other law firms involved in the case are Reese Richman LLP and Whatley Drake & Kallas, LLC.

VitaminWater contains between zero and one percent juice despite product names such as "endurance peach mango" and "focus kiwi strawberry."

"When I bought VitaminWater, frankly I thought I was doing myself a favor health-wise," said the plaintiff, San Francisco, California, resident James Koh, who used to purchase and drink VitaminWater after working out at the gym. "I was attracted by the prospect of getting extra vitamins. But I had no idea that I was actually getting almost a Coke's worth of sugar and calories. There's no way I would have spent money on that, had I known."

VitaminWater's website, marketing copy, and labels claim that VitaminWater is healthy, claiming, for example, that "balance cran-grapefruit" has "bioactive components" that promote "healthy, pain-free functioning of joints, structural integrity of joints and bones" and that the nutrients in "power-c dragonfruit" "enable the body to exert physical power by contributing to the structural integrity of the musculoskeletal system."

While it is true that vitamins do play various roles in the human body, the statements on VitaminWater labels go far beyond even the loose, so-called "structure/function claims" allowed by the Food and Drug Administration and cross the line into outright fraud, according to CSPI.

Moreover, VitaminWater contains between zero and one percent juice, despite the full names of the drinks, which include "endurance peach mango" and "focus kiwi strawberry," and "xxx blueberry pomegranate acai," among others. A press release for the "xxx" drink claims its antioxidants makes the drinker "last longer" in some unspecified way; in any event, it has no blueberry, pomegranate, or acai juice, nor do the others have any cranberry, grapefruit, dragon fruit, peach, mango, kiwi, or strawberry juice.

According to documents filed in 2007 with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Coke acknowledged that "obesity and other health concerns may reduce demand for some of [its] products," and that "increasing public awareness" about health experts' concerns over sugar-sweetened beverage could affect the company's profitability. That year, Coke acquired VitaminWater's parent company, Glaceau. Also in 2007, CSPI sued Coke and its partner Nestlé over an artificially sweetened green-tea-based drink called Enviga. The companies claim Enviga burns more calories than it consumes, resulting in weight loss-a claim that CSPI says is not supported by the small number of studies on the drink's ingredients.

Soft drink consumption shown to increase cancer risk!

According to a recent study conducted by Dr. Susanna C Larsson at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, drinking just two sugary soft drinks every day could almost double the chance of pancreatic cancer. In the follow up studies that were completed, it was shown that even non-carbonated soft drinks could also be a culprit.

The risk of developing pancreatic cancer rises when the pancreas produces higher levels of insulin. According to the study, those who drank soft drinks at least twice a day had a 90 percent higher risk of developing the cancer than those people who avoided soft drinks.

In the November issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition they suggested that the increased risk may be related to sugar's effects on insulin action and glucose metabolism. 'Evidence is mounting that abnormal glucose metabolism and hyperinsulinemia may be involved in the development of pancreatic cancer,' they wrote.

According to the American Cancer Society, the 5-year survival rate for those with pancreatic cancer is only about 5%. It is only now that researchers are finding a link between high levels of sugar intake and pancreatic cancer.

Why Are Smart People So Ignorant When it Comes to Health, Vaccines and Vitamin D? (Part One) by Mike Adams the Health Ranger

As an observer of human behavior, one of the most fascinating things I've ever witnessed is really smart people dying of diseases that are easily preventable through basic nutrition (vitamin D, plant juices, targeted supplements, superfoods, etc.). I know doctors dying of cancer who take chemotherapy over vitamin D supplements. I know members of MENSA who are killing themselves with junk foods and diabetes. I know extremely intelligent attorneys and physicists who are among the smartest people in their respective fields; but when it comes to basic health, they're completely ignorant.

In fact, if you look around at all the "smart" people you know, you're likely to find the vast majority of them are incredibly ignorant when it comes to their own health. They know nothing about basic nutrition, the benefits of superfoods or the dangers of pharmaceuticals. They eat processed junk foods, dairy products and food products contaminated with pesticides and toxic chemicals. They may be the smartest people in the world in their labs or offices, but when it comes to their own bodies, they are among the most ignorant people on the planet.

How can this be?

How can such high-IQ people remain so utterly ignorant when it comes to their own health?

There are two reasons, it turns out. And one of them will blow your mind...

How to become an expert in one area while abandoning the basics
To be an expert in astrophysics, you have to spend many years studying astrophysics. To get really good at law, you have to study law. If you want to get good at anything, you have to focus on it, learn about it, and invest some time learning how it works.

That's what I've done with the subject of health and nutrition (and you too, probably). And yet I'm not an expert in astrophysics, nor law, nor brain surgery. Importantly, I don't have to be an expert in those areas because I don't practice in those areas.

And yet -- here's the important part -- all those physicists, attorneys and surgeons do have a physical body they need to take care of. They all need to become proficient in basic human health, regardless of whatever other specialties they might pursue.

In other words, everyone with a body needs to learn the basics of taking care of that body. And yet most of the smartest people in the world today have spent essentially zero time learning about human health. So even with their high IQs, they make childish, ignorant decisions when it comes to their own health. They may be doctorate-level academic thinkers in their own fields, but when it comes to protecting health and preventing disease, these people haven't even graduated from kindergarten yet.

You see this quite frequently in the geek community, by the way. Junk food, pharmaceuticals and caffeinated soda drinks seem to go hand-in-hand with the wired, pale and frenzied computer brainiacs who are, after all, smarter than everybody else. They can write DRM decryption code with one hand while they eat MSG-laden fried snack chips with the other. Like everybody else, they are high-IQ, highly-specialized experts in their fields who remain woefully uneducated when it comes to their own health.

But how can so many smart people be so utterly unaware of the basics of nutrition? That vitamin D prevents cancer and influenza? That aspartame kills your brain cells? That processed meat (beef jerky, bacon, sausage, pepperoni) contains cancer-causing coloring chemicals designed to make the meat look rosy fresh?

The real reason is more insidious than you may have imagined. If you want to learn it, read on...

Good health is bad for business
Here's the real reason why so many smart people remain so uninformed when it comes to their own health:

The institutions of power in our modern world go out of their way to keep people nutritionally ignorant.

By "institutions of power," I mean our governments, our private industries (health care and others) and the corporations that pull all the strings behind the curtains.

What are the most powerful corporations in our world? Aside from the military bombs-and-bullets companies (who have their own scams running), the most powerful corporations are drug companies, media companies, agriculture companies and food & beverage companies.

Now think about this clearly for a minute: What do all these companies have in common? How do all these companies keep their economic machines running?

The answer is: Nutritional ignorance of the masses.

You see, the agriculture companies depend on nutritional ignorance in order to keep selling their processed ingredients to food companies which then turn around and sell those nutritionally-depleted products to consumers. Media companies depend on the advertising revenues from the promotion of junk foods and junk beverages, and drug companies depend on the revenues from all the diseases caused by the widespread consumption of all those products.

These four industries -- Big Pharma, Big Ag, Big Media and Big Food -- have a dark, incestuous relationship that generates huge profits... but only as long as the masses remain nutritionally ignorant.

If people became proficient in nutrition, superfoods, vitamin D and natural foods, all four of these industries would suffer huge financial losses. Their sales and profits would plummet in a world where nutrition is common knowledge. Their continued financial success requires nutritional ignorance among the masses.

Why I Believe the Fountain of Youth Exist

How is it that there seems to be segments of the world’s population that live to an old age and die healthy?

In an article on longevity, “Approaching Immortality” by well-known author, Dr. Ronald K
Latz, maintains that there are several cultures in the world with people who enjoy long, productive lives. Those who live the longest and are the most productive drink from natural spring wells rich in minerals; especially calcium and magnesium.

Some of the known disease-free centenarian cultures of the world are the Abkhazians, the Bilcabambas and the Hunzas. They live in the mountains and get their water from melting glaciers. This water, which also feeds their crops, is so white with minerals it is called “the milk of the mountains” or “glacial milk” This means their crop-growing soil is constantly being replenished with nutrients and minerals from the glacial milk.

Dr. Howard Hagglund, M.D., in an article in Health News states, “We no longer get enough nutrients in our food because farmland in this country has been ruined. It takes only ten years of intensive farming to exhaust the minerals in any given tract of land.” He goes on to describe how the depleted land gets re-fertilized every year to produce green crops. But a “green” crop doesn’t necessarily mean a crop with sufficient trace minerals to keep us healthy. Many of these corporate run farms use three minerals to replenish their soil (N-P-K Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium). Plants growing in mineral abundant soil leach more than sixty minerals. Farmers get paid by the yield not by how nutritious and mineral rich their crops are. These farms produce very large fruits and vegetables that have a nice appearance. In most cases they are picked before they are ripe, shipped in cold storage, and then gassed or irradiated to ripen them. This process kills enzymes making them even less beneficial. The majority of the people in the civilized world eating these mineral void crops are not receiving the necessary amount of essential minerals in their diet to sufficiently maintain an optimal level of good health.

People drinking from what I call “The Fountain of Youth” are among the oldest people on earth and live in and around Okinawa, Japan. In Okinawa, the calcium and other minerals come from the coral reefs and are referred to as “the milk of the oceans.” Like the other centenarian cultures, their crops are nourished with this mineral water. However, unlike the others, “the milk of the oceans” contains organic minerals that are algae based. Drinking water in this form has worked for the Okinawans for hundreds of years.

An article in the magazine Shukan Asahi stated: “Japan is number one in longevity in the world. In 1995 the ministry of welfare announced a list of names of people who were over 100 years of age. The number of people in Okinawa was four times higher than the other areas of Japan.”
According to the Japanese, in 1979 a British journalist from the Guinness Book of Records went to the island of Tokunoshima, just north of Okinawa, off the coast of Japan He interviewed the world’s oldest documented living man and found this 115-year old man to be in very good health. Furthermore this centenarian, who finally died at age 122, had worked in the fields every day until he was 105. The journalist also discovered that all the inhabitants of the island who lived to be a very old age, were healthy, and had a low incidence of serious illness and degenerative disease.

There are several common factors other than their water that contribute to the longevity of these cultures. These include low levels of stress, plenty of sleep, hard physical work and faith. I love this product. As a matter of fact my husband is on home life-support as a result of final stage emphysema, COPD, colon cancer and heart problems. 10 Reasons why water is critical to good health

1. Water is the substance of life. Life cannot exist without water. We must constantly be adding fresh water to our body in order to keep it properly hydrated. Water can be a miracle cure for many common ailments such as headaches, fatigue, joint pain, and much more. We can go for weeks without food, but only 3 days without water!

2. The body is comprised of 80% water. Water makes up nearly 85 percent of your brain, about 80 percent of your blood and about 70 percent of your lean muscle. (Because there are a lot of tissues that have less water, the average is about 50 percent.).
